about

The Caribbean’s opening EP started life in 2000 as an earlier group’s next EP until the earlier group ceased to exist (roughly 1/3 of the way through the recording). Kismet, really, because this record was very much a new thing. For the first time, we were taking control of the recording [on my trusty Roland VS-880 8-track] and eschewing most if not all of the rules to which we had previously hewed so fiercely. This approach is, of course, what split the earlier group, but it has been a central thread running through all The Caribbean’s work ever since: if we think it’s evocative and charming, we’ll do it. The scary part at the time was actually recording because I had no fucking clue what I was doing. And no one else did either. Really, until I read the recording analogy of sound through the board functioning like water through the plumbing in a house, I could not get my mind around the process. Which is strange , because I know even less about plumbing than I do recording. But after that lesson, there was no reason we couldn’t do anything that made us feel alive – as long as I thought of myself as a plumber, not a producer. Certainly not an engineer. Are you fucking kidding?
